Buena Vista Social Club "Chan Chan"

The Buena Vista Social Club was a members club in HavanaCuba that held dances and musical activities, becoming a popular location for musicians to meet and play during the 1940s. In the 1990s, nearly 50 years after the club was closed, it inspired a recording made by Cuban musician Juan de Marcos González and American guitarist Ry Cooder with traditional Cuban musicians, some of whom were veterans who had performed at the club during the height of its popularity.

Phantom Planet "Do The Panic"

Phantom Planet is named after the theme song of a 1961 B-movie called The Phantom Planet. They decided on the name in 1994 in a Pizza Hut.[citation needed] They played their first show in 1994 at The Troubadour in Hollywood, California.[citation needed] Most of their friends could not attend because they were still in high school.[citation needed]

Phantom Planet released their debut album, Phantom Planet is Missing in 1998. A straightforward pop record, with influences ranging from The Beach Boys to Electric Light Orchestra, the album didn't catch on. It was after the band's second album, The Guest in 2002 that the band found success. It produced the popular song, "California". The Guest continued the pop-rock sound the band introduced in their debut.

The band's eponymous third album in 2004 marked a change in both the band's sound and lineup. Ditching their radio-friendly pop-rock, the band moved towards a garage rock sound. Lead singer Alex Greenwald stated that he wants the band to continue to change its sound. "I love rock 'n' roll music," Greenwald said. "I especially loved bands, like The Beatles, that changed with every single record they made. That's been our plan from the get-go. We want our records to be like experiments. We want to have fun with the music. People can hear when you're not having fun. They discover you're bored and you're boring."[1] However, in the middle of recording the album, founding member and drummer Jason Schwartzman abruptly left the band to focus on his acting career. He was replaced by Jeff Conrad, who helped record the remainder of the album. Phantom Planet was released to mixed reviews from critics. Shortly after the album's release, guitarist Jacques Brautbar left the band to pursue a career in photography

Tim Williams - "Out There" (Tripwire Acoustic Session)

With roots in the Midwest, Williams' music career began in Boston, MA with a self-released EP "Songs For the Commute". After one year in Boston, Williams moved to New York and immediately began writing and recording a second release while staying at the Hotel Chelsea. These sessions turned into his two subsequent albums, "8/18 Chelsea Sessions" and "Tales of Digression" which would soon after become the first two releases on the Dovecote Records label.

Williams supported these releases playing small clubs and venues in the US and UK. In 2004 he met London-based producer Dave Lynch during a showcase at the CMJ festival in New York. Lynch offered to record Williams' next record if he ever found himself in the UK again. In November, 2005 Williams moved in with friends in EastbourneEngland and began writing and recording with Lynch. The resulting album ("When Work Is Done") marked Williams first release with national exposure. He embarked on multiple tours making stops at South By SouthwestCMJ, and theSundance Film Festival. His video for "Novel" won MTV's weekly video contest The Freshman.

Tim is currently writing and recording his next LP set for release in the Spring of 2009.

Gogol Bordello

Gogol Bordello is a multi-ethnic Gypsy punk band from the Lower East Side of New York City that formed in 1999 and is known for its theatrical stage shows.[1] Much of the band's sound is inspired by Gypsy music, as its core members are immigrants from Eastern Europe. The band incorporates minor-key accordion and fiddle (and on some albums, saxophone) mixed with cabaretpunk, and dubas well as multiple languages. Phill Jupitus described the band as "a bit like The Clash and The Pogues having a fight... in Eastern Europe,"[1] while Kenneth Partridge of The Hartford Courant described lead singer Eugene Hütz's voice as "somewhere between that ofBorat and Triumph the Insult Comic Dog".[2]

The Avett Brothers "Paranoia In B Flat Major"

The Avett Brothers (pronounced /‘eɪvɪt/) are a folk-rock band from Concord, North Carolina. The band is made up of two brothers, Seth Avett and Scott Avett, who play the guitar and banjo, respectively, and Bob Crawford who plays the stand-up bass. They are often joined on tour by cellist Joe Kwon. Risen from the ashes of Seth and Scott's former rock band Nemo, The Avett Brothers combine bluegrasscountry, punk, pop melodies, folkrock and rollhonky tonk and ragtime to produce a sound described by the San Francisco Chronicle as having the "Heavy sadness of Townes Van Zandt, the light pop concision of Buddy Holly, the tuneful jangle of the Beatles, the raw energy of the Ramones." The group itself eschews labels, feeling that "none would do the music the justice. It's simply left up to each person to extract his or her own account from the Avetts' music."

In the past year, The Avett Brothers have gone from relative unknowns to the poster children of a brand new and rapidly growing genre of American music, described by critics and fans as "indie roots", "folk-punk", or "grungegrass".

Their live performances showcase their use of three-part harmony and southern rock feel, and are admired for being intense, energetic, and soulful.

The band was formerly signed to Ramseur Records, based in Concord, NC. Other artists on the label include The Everybodyfields,BombadilMartin Stephenson and Samantha Crain & the Midnight Shivers. On July 6, 2008, the band announced that their next full-length album will be released under the American Recordings/Columbia Records label.[1] On April 26, 2008, the band announced that their new album I and Love and You will be released in stores on August 11, but will be available at their CD release concert August 8 at the Bojangles' Coliseum in Charlotte, NC.[2]

The Pixies "Where is my Mind"

"Where Is My Mind ?" is a song by the American alternative rock band Pixies. It is the seventh track on their 1988 album Surfer Rosa. The song was written by frontman Black Francis while he attended the University of Massachusetts Amherst, inspired by his experiences scuba diving in the Caribbean. He later said he had "this very small fish trying to chase me. I don't know why - I don't know too much about fish behavior." While failing to chart, the song is a fan favorite and is played during the band's concerts.

The song begins with Frank Black playing a four chord pattern twice on an acoustic guitar with the rest of the band joining in for the first verse of the song. After finishing the first verse Black continues playing the four chord pattern during the chorus, before completely stopping, until the band joins in again and they start playing the second verse in which Joey Santiago adds a short solo and returns them to the first verse that finishes the song.

"Where Is My Mind?" was prominently featured during the final scene and ending credits of the 1999 film Fight Club. It has also been featured in an HBO commercial for The Dark Knight. In 2007 it also appeared in the 45th chapter of The 4400, considered the series finale. A cover byCity Wolf is also featured in the 2009 film Observe and Report.
